Starting today to get your finances in order is much better than waiting until you have more money.  If you learn to budget now, you will have more money later and a sound budget.

Following holidays, families strive for financial discipline

The champagne cork has been popped, the NFL postseason has arrived and Christmas trees are making the move from the living room to the recycling center.
January has arrived and brought with it those twins of new year finances: the holiday spending hangover and budget resolution.

If you regret how much money you spent in December and have made a vow that 2010 will be the year you will create — and actually stick to — a budget, now could be the time to start.

Maureen Hankins with YWCA Credit Counseling, which has an office in Las Cruces at 277 E. Amador Ave., said that this is their busy time of year.

“It goes from our slowest month to boom, January and February get very busy for obvious reasons,” Hankins said. “People want to pay for Christmas and they want to get back on track, so in January and February we see a lot of people.”

Las Crucen Stephanie Bullington said that she makes a budget and tries to stick to it, but she understands why the task is difficult to maintain.

“People do have circumstances that come up beyond their control, especially with today’s economy,” she said.

Dolores Rosell is the housing coordinator with the YWCA Credit Counseling office said you should ask yourself a question with every purchase: “Do you need it or do you want it?”  –more
